Brewster, M.A. 一 The Whitecaps suffered a 5-4 loss to the Y-D Red Sox, dropping Brewster to 13-13-6 on the season.

The downfall of the Whitecaps was defense, as they recorded four errors that allowed the Red Sox to take the upper hand.

The Brewster pitching staff wasn’t quite as dominant as usual, as they allowed eight hits, although only three of the five runs allowed were earned.

The top of the fifth inning made a major difference in the game, as the Caps recorded two costly errors that gave Braden Montgomery the opportunity to knock in two runs to give Y-D a 3-0 lead.

However, Brewster fought back by putting up three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, with Kurtis Byrne (TCU) delivering an RBI ground-rule double to center field.

“It felt good, especially in that situation […] I got my pitch, a middle-middle heater, and I got it pretty good. I thought it was a homer but it’s whatever,” said Byrne.

Byrne was selected to the Cape League All-Star team along with five others on the Whitecaps roster and is one of two catchers on the East team.

“It’s a really, really cool thing to be able to do, […] especially since our coaching staff will be out there and we have five other guys on the team. So it’s definitely going to be an awesome experience.”

To go with Byrne, the Whitecaps are sending Carson DeMartini (Virginia Tech), Alex Freeland (UCF), Grayson Tatrow (Abilene Christian), Brennan Oxford (Wake Forest), and Ryan Chasse (Campbell) to the All-Star Game.

The Whitecaps will get a much-needed rest day tomorrow, then will be back in action on Tuesday at Veteran’s Field against the Chatham Anglers, with the first pitch at 7:00 pm.
